FAQs

General

Who is 57st. design?

57st. design is a Chicago-based contemporary furniture brand. We design, manufacture, and retail all of our work in-house, and all in Chicago.

What is the Design Circulation program?

Design Circulation is an opt-in service created by 57st. design. If you buy a Design Circulation-eligible piece, we guarantee to buy it back from you in exchange for store credit, no matter when and regardless of wear. We then restore it to its original condition and resell (circulate) it to another customer. Circulated furniture is sold for less than our standard, newly-made furniture. For more information, visit our Design Circulation page or read more about it in our FAQs below.

Where is your furniture made?

On the Southside of Chicago, in the same workshop in which our sister company, 57th Street Bookcase, has been making furniture for decades.

Where do you ship?

We ship to the contiguous United States, as well as select Canadian cities. For more information, visit our Shipping + Returns page.

How much is shipping?

Different pieces incur different shipping fees. Please see our Shipping + Returns page for specific shipping options and rates.

Do you offer discounts to the trade?

Yes, we offer discounts to designers and architects. Please visit our Trade page. You can also get in touch with us at info@57stdesign.com for more information.

Is your work sustainable?

Yes! Though we shy away from novelty “eco-materials,” our design philosophy is grounded in sustainability. Our furniture is meant to last from generation to generation. This ethos is reflected in the choice of materials, the mode of construction, and our particular approach to finishing. All our wood is sustainably harvested in the United States. Sustainability is also fundamental to our Design Circulation service.

Is assembly required?

The majority of our work comes fully assembled. Certain items require minimal assembly. If a particular item requires assembly, it will be clearly denoted on the product page, along with a short description of what sort of assembly is required.

Can I get samples?

Yes! Send us an e-mail at info@57stdesign.com. specifying the samples you’d like, as well as your address and contact information, and we’ll send the first set of samples to you free of charge.

Do you sell gift cards?

We do! They’re available here.

What is the difference between a “Circulated” and “Standard” furniture?

Circulated pieces are less expensive and can be returned to 57st. design, at any point in the future and regardless of wear in exchange for store credit. Circulated furniture may have been owned previously, but has been restored to its original condition at our Chicago workshop, and is indistinguishable from the day it was first finished. Standard pieces are more expensive but are made completely new when ordered and cannot be returned to 57st. design for store credit. Most pieces at 57st. design can be purchased as either Circulated or Standard.

Design Circulation

What is Design Circulation?

Design Circulation is an opt-in service created by 57st. design. If you buy a Design Circulation-eligible piece, we guarantee to buy it back from you in exchange for store credit, no matter when and regardless of wear. We then restore it to its original condition and resell (circulate) it to another customer. Circulated furniture is sold for less than our standard collection. For more information, visit our Design Circulation page.

Wait! I can really give back my furniture to you in exchange for store credit, no matter when and regardless of the condition of the piece?

Yes! You can give back your furniture in five weeks-- or in five years. We’ll take it back regardless of wear, including but not limited to water marks, stains, nicks, scratches, chips, and dents. However, we reserve the right to reject furniture that has sustained irreparable damage consequence of misuse.

How much store credit do I get?

You will receive up to 40% of the original list price in store credit, depending on the particular piece. The circulation percentage is indicated on the piece’s product page.

Do I have to buy a circulated piece?

No! You can buy any piece from our collection newly-made. Just choose the “Standard” buying option during checkout. “Standard” pieces are more expensive than Design Circulation pieces and cannot be returned for store credit.

How do I participate in the Design Circulation program?

Participation is easy! All you have to do is buy a piece through the Design Circulation program. By doing so you are eligible to return that item at any point in the future for store credit. To be clear, you own the piece outright unless you decide to exchange it for store credit.

Are all pieces eligible for the Design Circulation Program?

No. Certain pieces in our collection are not eligible for Design Circulation.

How do I know if a piece is eligible for Design Circulation?

Every product page will list whether or not a piece is eligible for Design Circulation.

Can I give back furniture from another company?

No. You can only give back pieces from 57st. design that qualify for Design Circulation.

If I buy a piece through the Design Circulation program, will I be receiving a piece of furniture that's been owned before?

Yes! When we take back a piece, we restore it to its original condition. It will be indistinguishable from a newly-made piece. Restored pieces are subject to the exact same quality control standards as newly-made pieces. However, during the first few years of Design Circulation, you are likely to receive a newly-made piece regardless due to the limited number of pieces in circulation.

What is the difference between a “Circulated” and “Standard” furniture?

Circulated pieces are less expensive and can be returned to 57st. design--at any point in the future and regardless of wear--in exchange for store credit.

Why is a there a lead time on my circulated piece?

Design Circulation launched in 2018. We do not yet have an inventory of circulated pieces, so we must fulfill orders by building them new. As Design Circulation grows (and we build an inventory of circulated furniture) we’ll be able to fulfill orders faster. There is no discernable difference between circulated and standard furniture.

How do I return circulated furniture?

We’ll pick it up for free! Once the piece arrives at our workshop, we’ll release the store credit into your account.

What happens if you go out of business?

We’ve been building furniture in Chicago for 30 years. We’re not going away anytime soon.

Does my credit ever expire?

No!

Is my credit transferable?

Yes! Credit can be shared by purchasing a gift card. Say you have $300 in your account and would like to pass along $150 to family member. You can ‘purchase’ a gift card using credit from your account and send it to them digitally. Our gift cards never expire. The credit process must be initiated by the person who originally purchased the piece.

Will the value of my store credit change?

No, your store credit is fixed at the time of your purchase and will not change. Your store credit amount will be documented both in your 57st. design account and on your original purchase receipt. We reserve the right to change prices and store credit for any given piece. However, changes in retail price or store credit will not affect the value of your store credit. To learn more, see our Store Credit FAQ section below.

Will you be offering new pieces in your collection?

Yes, we’re constantly designing new furniture.

Is Design Circulation different than renting furniture?

Yes! Once purchased, you own your piece outright. It’s up to you whether you want to return it for credit or not.

How does Design Circulation benefit me?

Participating in the Design Circulation program allows you to: 1) Buy an heirloom quality piece for less, 2) Return your piece for up to 40% of the list price in store credit at any point. 3) Never pay for return shipping-- we will pick up the item(s) from you for free.

How does Design Circulation benefit 57st. design?

Circulating our furniture helps us save on material and labor costs, allowing us to offer heirloom-quality furniture at a lower price. We also believe Design Circulation incentivizes our customers to come back. We believe good design is long-lasting. We also believe good design is good business.

How do you make Design Circulation work?

We’re uniquely qualified to offer Design Circulation for two reasons: we manufacture our furniture both in-house and in America, and our furniture is solid hardwood and hand-finished, which makes it easy for us to refinish it to its original condition.

How is circulated furniture restored?

Every piece returned to our workshop is thoroughly inspected. We steam out nicks, scratches, or dents, before sanding away the original finish and reapplying a new coat. We also examine any hardware (e.g., drawer slides and door hinges) to ensure they are functioning optimally. If they aren’t, we replace them. We ensure that every circulated piece looks no different from the day it was first finished.

Why do pieces sold through Design Circulation cost less?

The virtue of the Design Circulation is that each piece can be sold repeatedly. As a result, we can offer these pieces for a lower price because we do not have to pay the same labor or material costs that went into initially building it. We pass those savings along to you!

Do you buy back customized pieces?

At the moment, we do not buy back custom pieces in exchange for store credit.

Where is the Design Circulation program offered?

We offer Design Circulation anywhere in the contiguous United States.

How do I exchange the piece for credit?

You must create an account with us when you check out. When you decide to exchange your piece for store credit you can request a pick up on our site from your accounts page. We will release the credit to you when the piece is picked up. The credit will appear in your account.

Will you ever refuse to buy back a piece of furniture purchased through Design Circulation?

Yes. Unfortunately, we cannot accept pieces back for store credit that have been seriously damaged or destroyed consequence of misuse. That said, it’s in our best interest to take back and recirculate as much of our furniture as possible. Routine wear, like water marks, patinas, scratches and dents, will not disqualify your furniture from being exchanged for store credit. If you have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at info@57stdesign.com.

Care

How do I prevent damage to my furniture?

Here are some general rules for caring for your solid wood furniture. Never use chemical cleaners. 2) Wipe up liquid spills as quickly as possible. 3) Avoid extended exposure to direct sunlight, which can discolor the wood. 4) Avoid exposure to extreme heat or cold, which can mar the finish and lead to cracking.

How do I clean my furniture?

For routine cleaning, all you need is a slightly damp cloth. Make sure to wipe the wood dry after.

How do I make my furniture last?

We recommend re-waxing your furniture every 1-2 years, or whenever the wood begins to look “dry.” Re-waxing will restore the luster to your wood and further protect it. For more information on how to wax your furniture, visit our Care page, or reach out to us directly at info@57stdesign.com.

If slight damage occurs, how can I touch up my furniture?

Hand-finished furniture is uniquely easy to touch-up. Using the appropriate techniques, you can correct nicks, scratches and stains at home-- no woodworking experience necessary. For detailed information on how to repair superficial damage to your furniture, you can visit our Care page, or reach out to us directly at info@57stdesign.com.
